Why do many religious people reject the theory of Reactance?
Reactance is deliberate disobedience to those in authority as a means to protect ones personal liberties. Usually when one is forced to take a certain view, or behave a certain way. For example, in the USA, we only have drinking problems with underagers, because the drinking law is so high, that kids feel the need to challenge it. In Europe, most people dont have a strict drinking laws, so theres no need to challenge it. Therefore, most people in Europe dont drink to get drunk. Its pretty common for the pastors kids to go bad. Ive seen it. So its a pretty solid theory. Yet many religious people still believe that the harsh and strict disciplinary methods work. Even time and time again it proves that it may work for a little while, but eventually they do exactly what you dont want them to, therefore refuting your authoritarian parenting, or authoritarian churches. Deal with it, its ineffective.
